NORLISK AUTOMATION PROJECT
Mining Plus collaborated with Norilsk Nickel on a Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) for the Skalisty Glubokaya Mine, with Stage 5 focusing on Autonomy and Automation. The objective was to provide a comprehensive overview of cutting-edge technologies, enabling Norilsk Nickel to transition toward a fully autonomous mining operation.
CHALLENGES
The project faced several unique challenges. A comprehensive database had to be developed to encompass all critical topics and technologies relevant to underground mining operations. This required a vast amount of data collection, evaluation, and cross-referencing. Additionally, the project demanded extensive expertise across a broad spectrum of criteria and knowledge domains to evaluate the various technological solutions. The complexity was further heightened by the multilingual nature of the team and the need to coordinate across multiple time zones.
SOLUTIONS
Mining Plus adopted a methodical approach to navigate the project’s complexity. For each of the 20 assessment areas, a selection of "best-in-class" technologies was meticulously identified. These technologies were evaluated based on their ability to meet operational requirements for underground mining. Mining Plus leveraged its extensive expertise to compile and recommend one to two optimal technologies for each critical area, ensuring the solutions were aligned with the mine's unique challenges and future goals.
OUTCOMES
Mining Plus’s recommendations provided Norilsk Nickel with a clear, actionable roadmap for integrating advanced technologies into their mining operations. The comprehensive insights offered during Stage 5 of the PFS equipped Norilsk Nickel with the tools to make informed decisions and progress toward achieving full autonomy in their Skalisty Glubokaya Mine. This effort positioned the mine at the forefront of technological innovation and operational efficiency.
